QI (Quite Interesting) is a British comedy panel game television quiz show created and co-produced by John Lloyd, hosted by Stephen Fry, and featuring permanent panelist Alan Davies. Most of the questions are extremely obscure, making it unlikely that the correct answer will be given. To compensate, points are awarded not only for right answers, but also for interesting ones, regardless of whether they are right or even relate to the original question.

The QI Elves is Stephen’s nickname for the 14 people (5 permanent) who research, write and produce QI in all its guises – television, radio, books, games, apps and internet thingies. You can find them on twitter @qikipedia, where they have a staggering 472,000+ followers.

Last week the QI Elves did a wildly popular AMA on Reddit, which they followed up by sharing a series of 13 fascinating facts about animals as animated gifs. The quirky facts were brought to life by artist Michael Whaite (@MrWahite on Twitter), whose amazing animated gifs have been featured before on the Sifter.

If there is one dance move that is always sure to impress, it’s the moonwalk. The dance technique became popular around the world after Michael Jackson executed it during a performance of “Billie Jean” on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever on March 25, 1983. The special was broadcast on May 16th, 1983, and would become Jackson’s signature move.

If you’re like myself, you’re probably doing it wrong, even when you’re just trying to ‘imitate’ what it looks like (see #1 below)! Earlier this week, reddit user pugnant posted a series of animated gifs that explain the correct way to do the moonwalk.

The accompanying Imgur album has since been viewed over 766,000 times and the thought of nearly a million people giving this a shot in their office/home puts a smile on my face :)

The aging process is ongoing and one we don’t typically notice on a daily basis (see the captivating video at the bottom of the post, it perfectly demonstrates the subtlety of aging). However, when you see childhood photos of your grandparents or parents (or even yourself!), the difference can be startling.

In a recent video posted to dovga, we see portraits of elderly people transitioned into photos of their younger self. While many facial characteristics remain recognizable, the aging process is clear. The video featured 10 portraits which were then turned into Internet-friendly animated gifs by gifcraft.

While the animated gifs are dramatic, be sure to watch the video at the end to see how subtle the process really is. Everyone gets old; it’s how we live between the ‘then’ and ‘now’ that really matters.

The animated gif community on Tumblr is one of the strongest on the Internet. A rising trend on the microblogging platform is #3D gifs. By simply adding some vertical white bars to each frame of the animation, a 3D illusion is achieved. As Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz explains:

“These GIFs use depth of field and graphic elements to achieve their effect, just like many classic paintings. The white lines define the plane where the screen is, creating a mental division between background, midplane and foreground. Combined with the camera’s depth of field blur, it tricks our brain into thinking that things are popping out of the screen.”

Adam Cole is the science fanatic behind NPR’s popular science blog Skunk Bear. In a recent post, Cole wondered if he could use a technique known as Schlieren Flow Visualization to see sound.

The answer was a resounding YES! And the video below shows the fascinating results. Also included: a diagram of how Schlieren Flow Visualization works and animated gifs (from the video) that show what different sounds look like.

When Michael Bay directs animated gifs, explosions happen. Lots of them. A recent reddit post by jerip123 entitled, Unecessary Explosions unearthed a subreddit called /r/michaelbaygifs, described as ‘gifs, Michael Bay style’.

I’ve also embedded an excellent video by Tony Zhou that explores ‘Bayhem‘ — his style of camera movement, composition and editing that creates something overblown, dynamic and distinct. It’s worth a watch if you’re into film.

In celebration of David Bowie’s 68th birthday (8 January 1947), artist Helen Green created the glorious animated gif above to show the style icon’s transformations over the years. The gif is made up of 29 individual images from Davie Jones (during 1964, when he released his first single ‘Liza Jane’ with the King Bees) to a recent image of him taken by Jimmy King, 2014, around the release of ‘Sue (Or In A Series Of Crime)’.

Mike Hollingshead of Extreme Instability has released an amazing series of 17 HD looping storm gifs at an amazing 1920×1080 resolution. You can check out the full gallery here but be warned, some of the gifs may take a moment to load, with some as large as 20-30 MB.

Hollingshead has a tutorial on how to create these amazing gifs as part of an extensive 8 hour photography tutorial video, which is a culmination of everything he has learned in 13+ years of storm photography. You can find a list of the topics covered in his tutorial video here.

NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover recorded this sequence of views of the sun setting at the close of the mission’s 956th Martian day, or sol (April 15, 2015), from the rover’s location in Gale Crater. The four images shown in sequence (below) were taken over a span of 6 minutes, 51 seconds.

This was the first sunset observed in color by Curiosity. The images come from the left-eye camera of the rover’s Mast Camera (Mastcam). The color has been calibrated and white-balanced to remove camera artifacts. Mastcam sees color very similarly to what human eyes see, although it is actually a little less sensitive to blue than people are.

Dust in the Martian atmosphere has fine particles that permit blue light to penetrate the atmosphere more efficiently than longer-wavelength colors. That causes the blue colors in the mixed light coming from the sun to stay closer to sun’s part of the sky, compared to the wider scattering of yellow and red colors. The effect is most pronounced near sunset, when light from the sun passes through a longer path in the atmosphere than it does at mid-day.

What a difference 20 years can make. After last Friday’s landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, Mic.com created the informative gif above that shows the history of same-sex marriage in the US from 1995 to June 26, 2015.

 

 

 

 

In a narrow 5-4 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Court held that the recognition and provision of same-sex marriage is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Anthony Kennedy voted in favor while justices John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito voted against.

Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人) is an advanced transformation assumed by extraordinarily powerful members of the Saiyan race in the Dragon Ball franchise. The Super Saiyan form first premiered in April 1991, within chapter 317 of the Dragon Ball manga, entitled “Life or Death”. It also made its anime debut in 1991, first appearing in Dragon Ball Z episode 95, “Transformed at Last”. [source]

Copenhagen-based motion graphic studio CCCCCCC created 100+ animations for the new fitness app 7DailyMoves, 48 of which you can see in the amazing animated gif below.

On Dribble, the studio adds:

Illustrated in Illustrator, animated in After Effects. Some of it is rigged with Duik, and others are more hand animated. It depended on what worked best on the individual exercise.

Artist Diego Sanches designed pixel art characters and animations for an upcoming game called Science Combat for Superinteressante magazine.

The Street Fighter-style fighting game features eight legendary scientists whose special moves are based on famous discoveries they made. Each character has six basic attacks and two special attacks.

Street artist Lonac recently completed this spray painted mural of a heart, cleverly incorporating the building’s pipes as part of the piece.

The mural, entitled “HeArtbeats”, was even animated by Lonac which you can see below.

Inspired by Twitter’s logo, which is also made from 13 various sized circles, artist Dorota Pankowska challenged herself to illustrate 13 different animals using only 13 circles. On her website, Pankowska adds,

“I decided to give myself a design challenge. I haven’t done aesthetic work in a while and I wanted to show something simple and nice in my portfolio!”

Pankowska is originally from Toronto, Canada but is currently living and working in Paris, France. After graduating with a degree in photography; the multi-talented artist, designer and art director is currently available for freelance work. You can find more of her work at the links below.

In a fun creative exercise, designer Misha Petrick imagines what Instagram might have looked like on the Windows 95 operating system.

The tongue-in-cheek project, recently shared on Behance, does well to mimic the styling of the 21-year-old OS, however Win95 users (like myself) will attest that the OS was definitely capable of handling pictures and video of a much higher resolution than the pixel art portrayed.
